Ever found yourself in a foreign situation where you have no idea what is going on? Or you speak the same language but their actions still seem completely inexplicable? When we cross cultures and land in these strange situations, often the locals are coming from a completely different world-view to our own. Until we meet another culture, most of us never realize that our way of looking at the world is not the only way and our way of acting, or interpreting actions, may not be the only right way. Honor/Shame Cultures looks at the root values in many of the countries from the majority world, and offers practical advice on how to sail smoothly through foreign waters especially when missions or ministry is involved.
The book is split into 3 parts. The first part lays a foundational understanding of world views and the root value systems beneath our cultures. The second part examines the manifestations of honor/shame cultures, such as face, patron-client relationships, hierarchies, reciprocity and collectivism. The last part takes a deeper look at how we redeem honor in cross-cultural missions, including how it affects our Gospel presentations, conflict resolution strategies and discipleship methods.
Each chapter is filled with case studies of real experiences of cross-cultural workers around Asia. At the end of each chapter is a set of discussion questions as well as a recommended reading list for those who wish to investigate that topic further.
This book is aimed to equip short term mission teams, new missionaries, cross-cultural workers and anyone wanting to understand their honor/shame neighbor better.

Very practical! Just thinking and acting like an American when relating to two thirds of the world insults them deeply.
This book greatly helped me to see what is valued by different cultures. If you want to build and not destroy relationships, this book is a great start. Prayer, wisdom, and humility greatly needed along with the info in this book.

As someone who has lived in the West but born in the East as a Christian , I can assure you this is an important introduction. It is quick but extremely valuable in its references and the point it makes. I wish a booklist could be offered for people who want to continue.
Wow! Great presentation of Honor/ shame
Great insight with a lot of examples and a few personal stories. I’ll be keeping it as a resource for sure.
It's easy to see the extensive experience the writer of this book has throughout the pages as you read. Definitely a helpful resource for anyone traveling really, or even living in a diverse community!
An insightful piece of work that sheds light on many cultural complexities. Juliet brilliantly weaves together case studies and Bible excerpts into a practical guide for anyone seeking to understand how to live and ministry in honor/shame cultures. Great for an independent read or for group study.
I read the other more famous book on this subject and I personally think this one writes it in a more understandable level. I would definately read this book before reading other books on the subject.
A must read for those entering crosscultural ministry and an insightful look into sharing the gospel for all readers. Juliet used real life examples to demostrate the difference in types of cultures as well as the misgivings that occur between different cultures in order to allow the reader to understand how to better close the gap of confusion that occurs when sharing God's word and interaction in general.

It was a very thorough in site into honor and shame culture, and was explained in an easy to read and understandable manner.
